Hey guys. It’s been a while, hasn’t it? I’m sorry about that.
I don’t want to go into too much detail about my reasons for taking five-month blogging absence. However, I will say that things have been difficult lately. I’ve been struggling with my mental health and it’s been hard to find motivation to do even the simplest of tasks, but that’s a story for another blog post.
Today I wanted to focus on something else, something more positive: I’m re-launching my blog!
If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you might’ve noticed things have changed around here. If you randomly came across my blog on social media, you’ll probably have no idea. Trust me, though; it used to look very different.
Why I Changed The Way My Blog Looks
I guess the main answer I have for this is that I wanted a fresh start. My reasons for stepping away from my blog weren’t the most positive, and I didn’t want the reminder of it to be hanging over my head once I’d come back. I wanted it to be positive, and this was my way of doing it.
More than that, though, it was something I had been planning to do for a while, even before I left. There were some small, insignificant problems with my old theme, logo and headers that I was unhappy with. In addition that, I’ve been blogging for over two years, so my old posts needed refreshing.
I mean, I’m not necessarily the best at coping with change, but this one is something I’ve been preparing myself for over time. I’m slowly learning that change doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing.
The Changes I’ve Made
You can probably see one of the biggest changes with this re-launch: my theme. Like I mentioned above, my old theme wasn’t doing it for me anymore, and I wanted something new. I wanted something that looked sleek and professional, and I much prefer this theme for those purposes. This theme also allows me to make my header a more prominent feature of my blog, encouraging me to challenge myself creatively to make it the best it possibly could be.
My logo, which you can see above, and social media headers were something I’d not really put much thought into. I didn’t know the importance of coming across as a brand when blogging when I first went self-hosted, and my designs clearly emphasised that. However, as I became more involved in the blogging community, I started to observe designs that I liked and didn’t like. After that, it was simply a matter of putting what I liked into action.
Now, instead of having a different logo and header, everything matches nicely. If you visit any of my social media, or even view my blog, you’ll notice the same theme throughout. I’m not sure about you, but it makes me feel so much more organised having the same design, instead of different ones for different websites.
You may also notice that I now have a ‘Follow on WordPress’ button on my sidebar. This was something I wanted to do even before my hiatus, but could never quite figure out. I’m glad I’ve been able to do it now, though, as it makes it far easier for people to keep up with my latest posts. While I’m here, you may want to go over there and click on it, or sign up to receive my posts by email if you’d prefer.
Something I wouldn’t feel right not mentioning is that I’ve now added affiliate links to my website, along with a disclaimer page. This is something I’ve gone back and forth about for ages, but after struggling to afford another year of hosting, I knew I needed some way of making an income to keep this blog going. Obviously I have no idea whether this will benefit me at all, but I thought I’d give it a try anyway. But don’t panic: having affiliate links will not change my opinion about products, ever. And there’s no pressure on anyone to click on the links I provide. I just thought it was something I could try and see how it went.
What You Can Expect From My Blog Going Forward
One thing you should know is I’m not putting pressure on myself to keep to a blogging schedule. I’m going to try and post most Saturday’s, but if I’m having a difficult time, I need to know it’s okay for me to take a break. This is something that might become more rigid once I’m back in the swing of things, but for now, I’m easing myself in slowly. However, this isn’t all bad. It also means there could be posts up throughout the week, instead of rigidly sticking to a Saturday.
I’m also going to be posting regularly on Instagram again. I let the pressure get to me, and abandoned Instagram at the same time as my blog, but I can’t wait to get back into it. It seems to be a common theme in this post, but I really love challenging myself creatively, and Instagram gives me a platform to do that. Be sure to follow me to keep up with my latest posts! It’s a similar story with my Facebook page, which I abandoned when I was no longer posting on my blog. I’m hoping to pick that up again, too, so I’d love it if you could leave a like there, too!
To thank you all for sticking by me throughout my quarter life crisis, I wanted to do something to give back. I’m offering a small giveaway over on my Twitter, where you’ll have a chance of winning everything in the picture above.
It’ll run from today, Saturday 3rd March, until next Saturday, the 10th March, and ends at midnight. Unfortunately this is only open to those in the UK, so I’m sorry if you’re an international reader!
Thanks for reading, and until next time,
